Barangay Ginebra’s veteran big man Japeth Aguilar was among those present in Gilas Pilipinas’ first day of practice in the buildup leading to the 2025 Asia Cup Qualifiers next week.Aguilar, who was not in the initial 12-man lineup that head coach Tim Cone named, was seen training with the nationals at the Inspire Sports Academy in Laguna. The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has yet to confirm whether Aguilar will eventually be included in the roster, but his presence could help the national squad prepare as main big man Jun Mar Fajardo has yet to join the team following San Miguel’s grueling finals series against Magnolia, which the Beermen won after six games.Dwight Ramos, Scottie Thompson, Chris Newsome, Kai Sotto, Kevin Quiambao, Jamie Malonzo, Carl Tamayo, Calvin Oftana, and Justin Brownlee, all of whom are in Cone’s core team, were present at the training camp. CJ Perez, who was among the key cogs for the Beermen’s Commissioner’s Cup championship run, was also not in attendance yet. Aguilar’s Ginebra teammate LA Tenorio, who was part of Gilas’ coaching staff in the 19th Asian Games last year, was also seen in the practice.Gilas will hold a sendoff training on Monday that would be open to the public before taking on Hong Kong on Feb 22. They will then return home as they square off with Chinese Taipei on the 25th to close out the first window. —Bea Micaller/JKC, GMA Integrated News
