Rising big man Shawn Umali has decided to part ways with Lyceum of the Philippines University, ending a three-year stint with the Pirates in the NCAA men’s NBA tournament.The 6-foot-3 bruiser announced the development on Friday as he looked back on his journey with the Pirates that started all the way back in Season 97.”From the moment I entered LPU, I have been welcomed with open arms and genuine warmth. The support and encouragement from each one of you have made my journey here a memorable one,” Umali said in a heartfelt Instagram post.”To the LPU Community who have cheered us on, your support has been our motivation. Whether in victory or defeat, you have fueled our determination to give our best every time we stepped onto the court.” After spending his high school days with the Letran Squires, Umali transferred to LPU where he would be under the tutelage of head coach Gilbert Malabanan.In his rookie year in Season 97, Umali had to earn his minutes as he posted 4.25 points, 2.88 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, 0.5 steals, and 0.25 assists during their campaign that saw them wind up at ninth place with a 2-7 card.In the following year, Umali made a huge impact on the Pirates’ bid, averaging 7.26 markers, 5.26 boards, and 1.84 blocks that earned him the Most Improved Player award for jumping from 109th spot in the previous season to 22nd in Season 98.Touted as one of the top big men in the league, Umali’s inside presence helped LPU punched back-to-back Final Four appearances in Season 99, but they eventually fell to San Beda in the semifinals.Umali said his time with LPU has helped him become a better person on and off the court.”As I reflect on my time at LPU, I am very much grateful for the opportunities, memories, and friendships that have enriched my playing career and my life,” he said.Umali, though, didn’t reveal which school he will transfer to, but he wished the Pirates well for their campaign in Season 100.”Wishing everyone continued success in our own chosen path!
