San Miguel went on a second quarter rampage before surviving a late Magnolia scare, 103-95, to draw first blood in their best-of-seven PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals series on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena. The Beermen had to overcome a lethargic start with the Hotshots in control early as Tyler Bey collected 10 of his overall output in the first quarter to help them lead by seven and take a 24-20 lead by the end of the period. However, the wards of San Miguel head coach Jorge Gallent flipped the switch early by making the necessary adjustments. The Beermen mounted a massive 41-point barrage in the second frame, almost outscoring the halftime production of Magnolia as they built a pivotal 61-44 cushion. Bennie Boatwright was nothing short of big in that juncture, scoring 13 points after being limited to just four in the opening quarter. Marcio Lassiter had two triples in that run while Don Trollano and the returning Terrence Romeo chipped in five each to give San Miguel a double-digit cushion. The Hotshots refused to wave the white flag just yet as they pulled to within 13, 85-72, before heading to the fourth. Prior to that, they trailed by 19. San Miguel, though, responded with a 9-2 run capped by a Boatwright slam to secure it biggest lead at 20, 94-74, halfway through the period. The Hotshots then staged another run and trimmed the deficit to a single digit, 94-85, thanks to the bench mob led by Joseph Eriobu and Russel Escoto.Things became interesting when Magnolia’s late rally saw them behind by just five, 100-95, before forcing Boatwright to commit a turnover with 53 seconds left. However, they could not capitalize on it as Jio Jalalon went wide on his jumper before turning the ball over in the final 34 seconds. Back-to-back splits from the line from CJ Perez and Jun Mar Fajardo sealed it for the Beermen as they drew first blood in the series. Boatwright was a double-double machine for San Miguel with 28 points and 16 rebounds alongside two assists, two blocks, and a steal while Fajardo tallied 11 markers, 11 boards, five dimes, and two rejections. Marcio Lassiter, who had a quiet second half after a 14-point first half outing, finished with 16 while Perez and Trollano chimed in with 19 and 10 apiece. Bey paced Magnolia with 26 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Mark Barroca grabbed 16 markers off the bench. San Miguel will look to clinch a 2-0 series lead come Game 2 on Sunday at the same venue while the Hotshots will try to even the series. —Bea Micaller/JKC, GMA Integrated News
